Distracted driving is one of the biggest causes of accidents during the holiday season, as we’ve mentioned before. But it is also a driving hazard 365 days a year.

While we can’t control other people’s driving habits, we can certainly take care of our own. And one of the easiest ways to lessen the number of distracted drivers on the road is by refusing to be one of them.

Here are six easy ways to avoid driving distractions and be a better, safer driver.

1. Put your phone away.

Yes, we hear this one all the time: texting and driving is bad. But you don’t have to be texting while driving to be a distracted driver.

Just hearing the ding of messages or...

With 2015 coming quickly to a close, Metropia's staff couldn't see the year end without thanking the many people who make our startup possible. That's why we're throwing a Gratitude Party this week.

We've invited our awesome neighbors, our loyal users, our dear partners, and our beloved community members to join us for some Pinup Pastries' cupcakes and other delicious refreshments. The festivities will take place this Friday, December 11, starting at 3:00 p.m. in the Metropia office, 1790 E. River Road #140, Tucson, AZ, 86718.

Gratitude is a concept that gets thrown around a lot in our culture. The idea of being thankful for what we have and of giving thanks is one that many people seek to cultivate in a society that has long been seen as greedy and consumptive.

As a startup that seeks to...

We can talk about driving safety in different elements and in different kinds of seasonal weather . But what about different seasons in their less physical sense? After all, the “holiday season” bridges fall and winter weather, as well as those seasons’ calendar dates.

The holidays are a time of celebration for many people from diverse backgrounds, whether they celebrate religious holidays or federal holidays, or both. Sometimes those celebrations can involve behaviors that endanger others in one way or another.

From braving mall traffic to late-night streets, here’s how to get around safely during the holidays.

Know the hazards.

One of the biggest challenges for drivers during the holiday season is other drivers....

Tucson, Arizona, is one of the sunniest towns in the US. It’s also the place where you can find Metropia’s headquarters.

It’s no New York City, but the urban sprawl of a 500,000-population college town in the middle of the desert creates a certain kind of traffic that is unique to the west. There are brutally hot spring, summer, and fall months that drive residents to take the shortest path from air-conditioned building to air-conditioned car, and early town planners didn’t consider urban sprawl when they set out to fill up all of that beautiful, open space.

So how does one get around in the Old Pueblo, you might wonder?

By Car

As you might have guessed, Tucson residents overwhelmingly commute by car. The necessity for air conditioning in the hot months makes this an easy choice, but it...

Commuting during specific seasons can bring different safety and efficiency issues for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians alike. One such factor is the rain that many parts of the country experience in the fall and winter months.

While we’ve discussed ways to drive safely during autumn, it doesn’t hurt to look at how to handle rain in particular. No matter how you get to work when it’s wet out, here are some tips to get you there dry, safe, and on-time.

By Car
•    Give yourself space
Give yourself an extra car length of space when it’s raining. Your reaction time decreases when the roads are wet, and the likelihood increases of hydroplaning, skidding, or not being able to stop for someone else’s hazardous driving.
Give bicycles five...

Metropia and Meals on Wheels Partnership Donation in Austin

Tis the season for giving, and Central Texans are starting to look for ways to give back to their communities. At Metropia, alleviating traffic congestion is a way for us to give back to the city we love year round, but this year we wanted to do something extra special to mark our first official holiday season in Austin. And we found the perfect way to do so.

We’re excited to announce our first Austin-based nonprofit partnership with Meals on Wheels and More (MOWAM). Since 1972, this nonprofit has been hard at work delivering hot and nutritious meals to homebound older adults and people with disabilities. Today, the organization is one of the largest meal-delivery organizations in Texas, distributing more than 3,000 meals each and every business day.

Autumn and spring can be the two most pleasant times of the year to consider bicycling for your daily commute. Even if you just hop on your bike for an evening or early morning ride, the less extreme weather seems to be the best for taking to two wheels.

In many parts of the country, autumn can bring rain, drifts of fallen leaves, and increased mud--all of which can negatively affect bicyclists as they ride. In other parts of the country, such as much of the Southwest, the leaves wait to fall until winter but temperatures drop near or below freezing overnight.

No matter where you live, autumn's hazards require a certain amount of care from bikers. Here are a few habits to form that will get you through to the next batch of extreme weather conditions.

Keep your balance.

APA Planning Conference Arizona 2015 Metropia Traffic

Finding ways of “Embracing Change” is going to be on everyone’s mind at the American Planning Association Arizona Conference this coming weekend, Nov. 4 through Nov. 6, in Tucson. The association is made up of community leaders and certified planners who work to improve the places where they live.

The conference, which provides certification maintenance credits for association members who wish to keep up their planning credentials, is focused this year on addressing ways of making change possible in communities while at the same time preserving their history and maintaining the things about them that presently work well. Since it is taking place in Tucson, the conference will explore how the town has revamped its greater downtown area over the past decade—which includes the...
